Duncan has 19 years’ investment experience of which 14 years as an investment consultant and 5 years in offshore alternative investment management. His extensive investment experience in both fields provides him with a unique perspective to ask the right questions and provide high conviction investment insights.
Duncan has consulted to most of the largest and most prestigious retirement funds in South Africa. He previously fulfilled the role of Director, Head of Manager Research and Senior Investment Consultant at two of the largest investment consulting companies in South Africa. He also previously fulfilled the role of Managing Director and finally the Chief Investment Officer of Sanlam’s offshore alternative asset management business.
In 2010 he founded GraySwan, a boutique and independent investment consulting and wealth management company, alongside his partners Kobus, Gregoire and Tania.
This father of three is a novice stage-racing mountain biker and surfing, fly-fishing and guitar enthusiast. He is a bespoke reader and a curious learner, always amazes you with his extensive knowledge of investments.

Not only have we successfully consulted to most of the largest institutional funds in South Africa but we have also previously managed many of these Fund’s assets whilst working for Sanlam’s offshore investment management business. Our wealth of experience over the past two decades in both investment consulting and investment management enables us to understand our clients needs.
Very few investment consulting teams have actual investment management experience. This places us in the superior position to implement not only optimal but also practical investment strategies and to negotiate mandates and fee structures that is most beneficial to our clients.
During the past four years we have successfully extended our proven institutionalized investment advisory and wealth management approach to private investors, corporate investors as well as family offices. We now service the entire spectrum of investors and all our clients have access to our best views and our cost efficient and most importantly top performing track records.
As with our motto, “always count”, we test and verify everything. Each month we conduct more than 30 different detailed investment manager peer group GraySwan ScoreCards. Every report encapsulates more than 30 pages of performance and risk related statistics and form part of various quantitative reports, which we use as an initial screening methodology in our investment manager research process.
